How Long Is Eternity?
We live as if tomorrow is guaranteed. We hurry from one appointment to another, work through long lists, make plans, pay bills, raise families, and chase the next goal. Life keeps us so busy that we rarely stop to think about the one thing that matters beyond all of it: eternity.
The truth is simple and unavoidable. Every one of us will die. We may avoid the subject, soften the language, or push the thought aside, but none of us escapes it. Scripture says that people are destined to die once and then face judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Our earthly lives have an ending, but our existence does not.
That makes our response to Jesus Christ the most important matter we will ever face. Jobs change. Money comes and goes. Possessions wear out. Even the longest earthly life is brief when set beside eternity.
What Is Eternity?
We measure nearly everything by time: minutes, days, birthdays, anniversaries, and generations. Eternity is different. It has no finish line. A thousand years do not bring us any closer to its end, because eternity has no end.
God has placed an awareness of eternity in the human heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11). That may be why questions about death, heaven, judgment, and the meaning of life never fully disappear. We can distract ourselves for a while, but eventually every person must ask: What happens when this life is over, and am I ready?
In this short message, Billy Graham explains why we should not waste the time God has given us or postpone the question of eternity.
What God Says About Heaven
The Bible describes heaven as being in the presence of God. Jesus told His followers that He was going to prepare a place for them and that He would come again and take them to be with Him (John 14:2–3).
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”
Heaven is not something we earn by being respectable, religious, generous, or better than someone else. It is the eternal home God gives to those who belong to Christ. Its greatest joy is not streets of gold or freedom from pain. Its greatest joy is God Himself—knowing Him fully and living forever in His presence.
What God Says About Hell
Jesus also spoke plainly about hell. He did not present it as a joke, a figure of speech, or an idea meant only to frighten people. He warned of final judgment and eternal separation from God (Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43–48). Revelation describes a final judgment in which those whose names are not found in the Book of Life face the second death (Revelation 20:11–15).
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
This is hard truth, but ignoring it does not make it less true. A loving warning is still an act of love. If a bridge is out ahead, the kind thing is not to remain silent. God warns us because our lives matter to Him and because He has made a way for us to be saved.
The Decision Before Us
The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Sin is not merely a collection of mistakes. It is our rebellion against God and our desire to live on our own terms.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God did not leave us without hope. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came into the world, lived without sin, died on the cross in our place, and rose from the dead. He took the judgment our sin deserved. Salvation is God’s gift, received by grace through faith—not a reward we earn through good works (Ephesians 2:8–9).
Jesus said that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). Genuine faith is more than repeating words. It is entrusting ourselves to Christ and beginning a life of following Him.
Here Is What God Wants You to Know
Do Not Put Off What Cannot Be Changed Later
Many people assume they will think about God someday—after life settles down, after retirement, or after they have had more time to live as they please. But none of us knows how much time remains.
2 CORINTHIANS 6:2
Death closes the season in which we make this decision. The Bible gives no promise of a second opportunity after death. Once this life ends, the decision is settled. That is why this cannot be treated like a choice we can postpone indefinitely.
God does not ask us to clean ourselves up before coming to Him. We come honestly, admitting our sin and our need. We trust what Christ has done rather than what we have done. The invitation is open, but it must be received.
A Simple Prayer of Trust
A prayer does not save us; Jesus saves us. But prayer can express sincere repentance and faith. If you are ready to trust Christ, you may speak to Him in words like these:
God, I know that I have sinned and cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sin and place my trust in Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord.
Forgive me, make me new, and help me follow You for the rest of my life. Amen.
What Should I Do Next?
If you have sincerely placed your trust in Christ, do not walk alone. Begin reading the Bible, starting with the Gospel of John. Pray honestly. Find a faithful, Bible-believing church. Tell another Christian about your decision and ask for help as you learn to follow Jesus.

For Christians Eternity Gives Us a Responsibility
Those of us who know Christ cannot keep this message to ourselves. People around us are moving toward eternity—family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and strangers we pass every day. We cannot force anyone to believe, and we should never treat people as projects. But we can love them, pray for them, serve them, tell them what Christ has done, and invite them to trust Him.
Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19–20). Paul asked how people could believe in the One they had not heard about (Romans 10:14). Sharing the gospel is not reserved for pastors or missionaries. It is part of ordinary Christian faithfulness.
Memory Cross offers simple You Are Forever Loved cards that can help you share God’s love and start a conversation about faith and eternity.
The Question We Cannot Avoid
One hundred years from now, nearly everything that occupies our attention today will be gone. The urgent email, the overdue bill, the new purchase, the argument, the accomplishment, and the disappointment will all belong to the past. But eternity will have only begun.
The biggest decision of your life is not where you will live, what career you will choose, or how much money you will make. It is what you will do with Jesus Christ. Do not rush past that question. Do not assume you will have another day to answer it.
