Does God Really Love Me?
That’s a very different question.
It’s easy to believe that God loves someone else—the person who seems to have their life together, the person who goes to church every Sunday, or the person who hasn’t made the mistakes you’ve made.
But what about you?
What about when you feel like you’re not good enough? What about when you’ve failed? What about when you’re lonely, afraid, ashamed of something you’ve done, or simply wondering whether your life really matters?
What Are You Listening To?
There are a lot of voices telling us who we are.
Other people have opinions about us. Social media gives us endless opportunities to compare ourselves with other people. Our failures remind us of things we wish we could change. And sometimes the harshest voice of all is our own.
Christian singer Lauren Daigle’s song You Say speaks powerfully to that struggle. The song asks us to consider something important: instead of allowing fear, insecurity and failure to define us, what if we listened to what God says about us?
So What Does God Say About You?
The Bible doesn’t say that God will love you someday when you get your life straightened out.
It says something much more remarkable.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Notice when God loved us: while we were still sinners.
God’s love isn’t a reward for getting everything right. You don’t earn it by becoming a better person, being more religious, or fixing all your mistakes first.
He already loves you.
God’s Love Isn’t Based on Your Performance
Most of us are accustomed to conditional love.
People approve of us when we do well. Employers reward us when we perform. Social media measures approval with likes and followers. Even relationships can sometimes make us feel that we have to earn someone’s acceptance.
God’s love is different.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!”
Christianity isn’t primarily the story of people trying hard enough to reach God.
It’s the story of God reaching out to us.
Here’s What God Wants You to Know
Can Anything Make God Stop Loving Me?
The apostle Paul asked essentially the same question nearly two thousand years ago.
His answer was emphatic.
“Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Think about that for a moment.
Nothing in all creation.
That includes your past. Your failures. Your fears. The opinions of other people. And those days when you don’t feel particularly lovable.
What If I’m Not Sure I Believe All This?
That’s okay. You don’t have to pretend.
If you’re unsure about God, start by simply being honest with Him. You don’t need special words and you don’t need to know much about the Bible.
You might simply say:
A Simple Prayer
God, I’m not sure what I believe or where I stand with You. But if You are there, I want to know You.
Help me understand how much You love me. Help me see myself the way You see me. Forgive me for the things I’ve done wrong and show me the person You created me to be.
Help me take the next step. Amen.
