Where Is God When Life Hurts?
It’s easy to talk about trusting God when life is going well. But what happens when something happens that you never wanted, never expected, and cannot understand?
What Happens to Faith When Your Heart Is Broken?
Pain has a way of changing the questions we ask.
Instead of asking, “Does God love me?” we may find ourselves asking:
Those aren’t necessarily signs that you’ve lost your faith.
They’re questions hurting people have been asking God for thousands of years.
TobyMac’s Story
TobyMac has spent much of his life making Christian music and encouraging other people through his faith.
But in 2019, his family experienced a devastating loss when his 21-year-old son, Truett, died unexpectedly.
Suddenly, many of the things TobyMac had sung and spoken about for years became deeply personal.
How do you trust God when your heart is broken?
How do you keep believing when you don’t understand what happened?
And how do you begin moving forward when life will never be exactly the same?
In this video, TobyMac talks openly about grief, faith, and what he discovered about God during one of the most painful seasons of his life.
As you watch, listen especially for what his experience taught him about God’s love, God’s presence, and the promise that God does not leave us when life becomes painful.
God Doesn’t Ask You to Pretend It Doesn’t Hurt
Sometimes Christians feel pressure to be strong.
We think faith means we shouldn’t cry, shouldn’t be angry, shouldn’t have questions, or shouldn’t admit that we’re struggling.
But that’s not the picture the Bible gives us.
The Bible is filled with people who cried out to God when life hurt.
David wrote about fear, loneliness and despair. Job questioned why terrible things had happened to him. Even Jesus wept when His friend Lazarus died.
Grief is not the opposite of faith.
Sometimes grief is simply what love feels like when someone we love is no longer beside us.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Where Is God in the Pain?
The Bible doesn’t promise that people who follow God will avoid suffering.
What it repeatedly promises is something different:
God will be with us in it.
There may be times when you don’t feel His presence.
There may be prayers that seem unanswered.
There may be questions for which you never receive a satisfying explanation.
But God’s love for you has not changed.
Your pain doesn’t mean God has abandoned you. Your questions don’t make Him walk away. And even when you cannot feel His presence, He promises that you are not alone.
That’s one of the most important truths to hold onto when life hurts:
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”
Nothing Can Separate You From God’s Love
Pain can make us feel separated from almost everything that once felt familiar.
But Scripture gives us an extraordinary promise: nothing that happens to us can separate us from God’s love.
“Neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Not grief.
Not loss.
Not fear.
Not questions.
Not even death.
Nothing can make God stop loving you.
You Don’t Have to Understand Everything Today
When you’re hurting, people sometimes try to give answers.
They may mean well. But there are moments when explanations aren’t what we need most.
Sometimes we simply need someone to sit beside us.
The same can be true in our relationship with God.
You don’t have to figure out why everything happened before you can turn toward Him.
You can come to God confused.
You can come angry.
You can come crying.
You can come with no idea what to say.
You can simply come.
Take the Next Step, Not the Next Hundred
When life changes suddenly, thinking about the future can feel overwhelming.
How will I get through next month?
What will the holidays look like?
What will life look like a year from now?
You may not need those answers today.
Sometimes the next step is enough.
What If I’m Angry With God?
Tell Him.
God already knows what you’re thinking and feeling.
You don’t have to hide your anger or questions behind religious words.
Some of the most honest prayers in the Bible are prayers from people asking God why He seems distant or why He allowed something painful to happen.
An honest conversation with God can still be a conversation with God.
And your questions don’t cause God to stop loving you or leave you.
What If I Don’t Know How to Pray?
Your prayer doesn’t have to be long.
It could be as simple as this:
A Simple Prayer
God, I don’t understand what is happening or why this happened. I’m hurting, and I don’t know what to do next. Please stay close to me. Help me remember that You love me and that You haven’t left me. Give me strength for today and help me believe that I am not alone. Amen.
Can Hope and Grief Exist Together?
Yes.
Hope doesn’t require you to forget the person you lost or pretend that what happened doesn’t matter.
It doesn’t mean every day suddenly becomes easy.
Hope means pain doesn’t get the final word.
For Christians, that hope ultimately rests in Jesus.
Jesus entered a world filled with suffering and death. He experienced rejection, sorrow and death Himself—and Christians believe His resurrection means that death is not the end of the story.
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”
If You’re Hurting Today
Maybe you found this page because something in your own life hurts.
Perhaps someone you love has died.
Maybe a relationship has ended.
Maybe you’ve received news you never expected.
Or perhaps life simply doesn’t look anything like you thought it would.
You don’t have to solve everything today.
But don’t isolate yourself.
Talk with someone you trust. If you have a church, let people there know what you’re going through. If the weight feels overwhelming, reaching out to a counselor or other qualified professional can also be an important step.
And talk to God—even if all you can say is:
“God, help me.”
Even in that moment, remember this:
You Don’t Have to Face This Alone
God loves you, and you don’t have to carry what you’re going through by yourself. If you’re hurting, we’d be honored to pray for you. You can also learn more about the hope Christians find in Jesus.
